Annie Dressner’s New Single is Calling Out Misogyny in Music

The singer-songwriter’s new song For the Thrill of It calls for a long-overdue change in the music industry to ensure women are safe and are met with respect.

“For the Thrill of It is my newest single, which stems from my personal experience.  Unfortunately, there is still a pervasive issue of misogyny in the music industry, where inappropriate behaviour too often goes unaddressed or overlooked; the song aims to inspire positive change in attitudes towards women in music and to encourage women to feel safe in speaking out.

Rather than blatantly spelling it out lyrically, I thought it would be fun to metaphorically speak about what people might do, even though they might know or should know that they shouldn’t do it. For the Thrill of It is how I imagined a possible motivation for that behaviour might have been.

While the lyrics and meaning behind the song are very serious, the tone of the production is quite upbeat and I think it’s a fun and catchy song. There’s a lightheartedness in the lyrics that is meant to point out how obvious it is that these misogynistic behaviours should not even be happening in the first place.

I shot the music video in an amazing space with giant instruments when I was on holiday with my family and I thought it could be fun to do an impromptu video. The end product is two videos running side-by-side as I liked both takes and thought it made it more fun to watch than the singular video.

While most of my experiences in the music industry have been positive, and many of my friends and colleagues in music are men, a few situations stick out in my mind, and I would like to see a change. By talking to other women in music, I know I don’t stand alone in hoping to tackle such issues. The bottom line is, that I simply would like mutual respect and the realisation that women shouldn’t have to put up with misogynistic behaviours, just because we have “tolerated” it for so long.

I’m not sure that I can advise other women in music, but what I’d hope for is that we can lean on one another to discuss mutual issues to help make a change, resulting in a safer workplace and not feeling degraded by the few folks that still find these behaviours acceptable. What we do should be more important than what we wear.”

For the Thrill of It
Do you touch art at museums?
Do you smudge window panes?
Do you pull threads out of sweaters?
Just to break them?
Do you press the emergency buttons?
Near elevator doors?
Take coins from slot machines
The ones who are winners but aren’t yours?
For the thrill of it
For the thrill of it
What makes you want it?
For the thrill of it
Do you play with defibrillators?
Do you text while driving?
Do you touch the paint on walls
While it’s still drying?
Do you play with light switches?
To try to blow a fuse?
Or do you double-dip your chip
After you’ve bitten it?
For the thrill of it
For the thrill of it
What makes you want it?
For the thrill of it
There you are hiding in daylight
There you are trying to survive
You better start to run
Run, run, run
Do you take single items
From a multipack?
You know they’re not for resale
You’re not meant to buy them like that
Do you film in the movies?
Do you sneak some soda in?
Do you use plastic straws
Even though England banned them?
For the thrill of it
For the thrill of it
That’s what makes you want it?
For the thrill of it
There you are hiding in daylight
Here we are trying to survive
When you’re near
We should run, run, run
From the thrill of it
Run from your thrill of it
You know you can’t have it
Man, that’s the thrill of it
For the thrill of it
For the thrill of it
You know we don’t want it
That’s the thrill of it
